EPK: What Bookers Really Look At (and the Mistakes That Cost You Gigs)

You think you need an EPK… In reality, you need to be bookable.

For a long time, the Electronic Press Kit (EPK) was presented as a simple digital press kit: a bio, a few photos, a video, links to social media.

But after analyzing dozens of discussions between bookers, tour managers, agents, and artists, one observation keeps coming up again and again:

Event organizers are not looking for a pretty press kit. They’re looking for a reason to book you.

And that’s not the same thing.

1

Mistake #1: Talking about yourself before talking about your show

Most EPKs tell:

  • the band’s story
  • influences
  • the journey
  • the albums

But a booker asks a different question first:

Is this band a good fit for my event?

Your story matters. But only after you’ve answered that first question.

2

Mistake #2: Making people do too much work

You send:

  • a 25-page PDF
  • a Google Drive
  • a ZIP file
  • five different links

A booker may receive dozens of requests every day. If they have to hunt for your music or your contact details, they’ll simply move on to the next band.

Your presentation should be viewable in a few seconds.

3

Mistake #3: Showing only music videos

A music video is a showcase. A live video is proof.

What bookers want to see

  • the atmosphere and the audience
  • your stage presence
  • your ability to bring a show to life

A decent-quality live recording is often more convincing than a perfect music video.

4

Mistake #4: Thinking the numbers do everything

Spotify streams, Instagram followers, or TikTok followers can provide context. But they never replace concrete proof.

What really reassures an organizer:

  • shows you’ve already played
  • festivals
  • support slots
  • reviews
  • photos showing an engaged room

Stats impress. Experience reassures.

What a booker wants to find in under a minute

A good EPK should let them answer these questions right away:

  • What genre is it?
  • What does the band look like on stage?
  • Where have they played before?
  • How do I contact them?
  • How do I request a date?

If any of these answers are hard to find, your EPK becomes less effective.

And what about the PDF?

For years, the PDF was the standard. Today, more and more artists are using a dedicated web page.

Why? Because it is:

  • always up to date
  • mobile-friendly
  • easy to share
  • able to embed music, videos, and photos directly

The PDF can still be useful as a summary sheet or a one-sheet, but it is no longer necessarily the main format.

Why we designed Yelinka differently

At Yelinka, we didn’t start with the question: “How do you create a beautiful EPK?”

We started with another question: “What does a booker need to see in order to make a decision?”

That’s why every Yelinka page is designed to highlight:

  • your music
  • your live videos
  • your press photos
  • your bio
  • your past and upcoming shows
  • a clear contact
  • a simple booking request

In other words, we’re not trying to create a pretty press kit. We’re trying to create a professional booking page, designed to help an organizer say “yes.”

In short

A good EPK doesn’t just answer the question:

Who are you?

It mainly answers this one:

Why should I book you?

And that’s probably the difference between a page that presents an artist… and a page that actually helps land gigs.

Yelinka guides you through a pro mini-site, gig manager, and assets library in minutes.
